I had some badly written, half finished rant about the new Fac251 club opening up in Manchester. My poorly explained piece was basically saying “why live in the past when there’s so much in the present, but obviously, you know, Factory was good back in the day”. Instead of that negativity, let’s instead consider this weekend in Manchester and the fantastic line up of bands at the Friends Of Manchester Festival.

Let’s get the spiel out the way and then I’ll mention some of the band’s I am most excited to see.
Who: Friends Of Mine
When: Saturday 30th January
Where: Kro Bar and Jabez Clegg
Tickets: From here
More info: Facebook event

The line up is an epic mix of local and out of town, established and brand new acts. So let’s be quick and to the point eh. It seems I will be spending most of my time in Jabez Clegg, so here’s who I will be seeing and be warned I can’t be bothered to try and describe the music but I’ve done the real work and linked to their MySpace pages. What more could you ask for?

4.30PM – HYACINTH GIRL – Really promising new tracks on their MySpace + a few people talking about them = a band worth catching early doors.

7.30PM – DUTCH UNCLES – I have honestly never seen a bad show by the Dutch Uncles. It would be pretty dumb to not see them at every opportunity.

8.30PM – EXLOVERS – A big highlight of the Great Escape festival in Brighton last May.

7PM- FORMER BULLIES – I haven’t seen these in AGES. Their debut 7″ got a spin on New Years Eve in my flat and it still is brilliant. I have no idea what they sound like these days. Good I’m assuming.

9.15PM- YOUNG BRITISH ARTISTS – Another band who seemed to do nicely in 2009 – be interested to see how they progress this year. (Also playing Manchester this week alongside the fantastic Real Estate and the mighty Spectrals)

10PM- THE CROOKES – Lovely men, excellent songs. Elle magazine has them tipped for big things in twenty ten, and they are usually right on most things.

10.45PM- YUCATAN – Can’t even remember when this band slipped into my consciousness – it’s Welsh, it’s beautiful and it’s epic. Sounds ace non?

6.30PM- REMEMBER HONOLULU – I am very excited to see these boys. Their demo’s on the MySpace hint towards some awesome Wavves esq tunes. First gig outside of their native Sheffield I do believe.

9.30PM- THE ANSWERING MACHINE – Similar to the Dutch Uncles in that I know exactly what I’m going to get and I’m going to love it. Plus I’m hopeful of some new songs to be played too. Oh yes. TAM 4eva.

7PM- CHRISTOPHER EATOUGH – I love Christopher Eatough because he’s writing intelligent songs with great lyrics. He also has a voice that I never get bored of.

10PM – JO ROSE – Like Eatough, Jo Rose is producing acoustic twinged music that actually stops you and makes you pay attention. His track on the recent Love and Disaster compilation shows just how good Jo Rose can be.

Let us also remember that Jabez Clegg has TABLE FOOTBALL! (I haven’t checked the live football on Saturday but we could always retreat to the Oxford (opposite Big Hands) if needs be)

If ALE waz a real good blog I’d have also mentioned – new Joanna Newsom track plus hot new photo.

This week can be summed up in three bands and they all link together nicely.

Firstly is a band from London called Lonely Galaxy. They’ve been on my radar for a few weeks to be honest. The lead track on their MySpace ‘Have A Heart’ is an epic thing of beauty. I implore you to take a moment to give it a listen. It’s funny how you can usually tell if a band will be alright by their MySpace. Lonely Galaxy keep things simple and don’t give too much away. Nice work.

I kept getting Lonely Galaxy mixed up with another band though this week. The band being Young Galaxy. I’m sure I have blogged about these before. But their song ‘Swing Your Heartache’ is a lovely thing – glad it came back to me this week certainly. (As a brief aside – one band I know I blogged about a while back was Avi Buffalo (November 08 in fact) – they have been signed by Sub Pop so mad props and high fives to them)

Finally I was reading Seperated by Motorways blog this week (a must read which I hope you know already). They mentioned a new band called Yuck who are well worth checking out. They even have Lonely Galaxy in their top friends on MySpace. Holy fucking shit eh. Anyway, Yuck may or may not have links to another more established band who have a spice in their name. (Actually I don’t know if Cajun is a spice or not…) Anyway two tracks up on their MySpace. Georgia which is a bit of a Pains Of Being Pure At Heart thing. But the best is Automatic, which is simply wonderful stuff.

Yuck – Automatic

Thanks for your patience

PS: If ALE woz a real blog we’d have mentioned:

New track from Gorrilaz and the Grizzly Bear Hot Chip cover.

Grizzly Bear – Boy From School
